Golf Scholarships for Girls
Seems there's a shortage of young women playing golf these days. NCAA estimated 200 out of 1800 female golf scholarships went unused in 2009.
Really? With the price of college these days? A disturbing trend to say the least.
With the implementation of Title IX, whereby colleges are required to have the same numbers of athletic scholarships for females and males, the discrepancy has become quite apparent. Actually, the problem begins much earlier than college with fewer girls getting into the game in the first place.
I don't know about you, but I'm heading to the course this minute and sign my eleven-year-old daughter up for lessons. Think of the opportunities, the value! Why, a little well spent money today may turn a huge profit come college—if she can shoot near 95 in tournament conditions. How hard can that be?
Better yet, if she's in the 80s, she'll draw definite interest from Division I programs and the scholarship offers will surely follow. What a wonderful opportunity for female golfers! Are you as excited as I am?
Then you might be interested in heading on over to the website for the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). An enormous resource for gathering information about golf scholarships and eligibility requirements, they also conduct national junior tournaments and the highest level of play. You'll also want to check in with the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). They, too, offer a wealth of information on the subject.
No matter where you begin your journey, the key is to start early. Get your girls on the golf course early and often. Get them enrolled in junior golf programs, like the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy. Based at the world-renowned Mission Inn Resort and Club 40 minutes outside of Orlando, these organizations provide tremendous opportunity for young golfers by not only teaching them the game, but setting them well on their way to earning that golf scholarship.
Certainly something to consider…
